Merci....!!!,
Two years ago, I was offered a guembri that came from Maalem Hassan Larousi's workshop. I just couldn't let the instrument down, and forgot all other instruments... But even before that, I had wanted to meet him personnally. Eventually, I could make the journey to Essaouira. Having very little interest for tourism and crowded places; i wanted (and very few readers would understand will understand the following: ) , I needed to receive a helping hand, a sound, a voice, to hear and feel "al haqiqa" from someone. I was welcomed: "à coeur et bras ouverts". Not only by him but also by his friend and fellow Gnawa master Saïd. Both as what we call in Bambara: Dya Tigi ! I ni ko. People like them are rare to meet nowadays, very rare! Now, as for the Guembri, look nowhere else! Go to Hassan Larousi ‘s Yellow Workshop, I have now order another one. Gnawa music is to heal, and is of the deepest most sacred and humble ways: that of the heart. It was, and is an honour to meet and learn to receive from men like them. An honour to play Hassan's guembri.
Hassan makes magnificent guembris, best sounding guembris that you can find in essaouira imho, very friendly, helpfull and great communication
Hassan is a true professional artisan. Very transparent, trustworthy, inclusive and knowledgeable about his craft and about Gnawa music in general. I look forward to picking up the instrument he is building for me, fully customized per my requirements as an electronic, sampling, looping instrumentalist: Highly recommended, and I’ll keep you posted! Edit: I picked up the instrument a a few weeks ago. It is a lovely beautifully and perfectly crafted instrument. I am new to the Guembri, but not to string instruments and you can tell by the harmonics by lightly pressing your finger on a string at the halfway points and you’ll hear a fifth - if I’m not mistaken - and it should be fully in tune, and it is. Hassan customized mine by putting an acoustic guitar pickup (alone, no battery or EQ box) inside the instrument underneath the bridge like some acoustic guitars have. This apparently is not generally done in this method, and Hassan sought advice from fellow masters who were unsure it would work. With guembris, if they use amplification they either use the typical battery powered one you see on a lot of acoustic guitars, with the EQ box that would require a hole to be made, or the old-school way, which is just sticking a piezoelectric pickup underneath the bridge on the outside of the instrument. I wanted the battery-free version to avoid batteries and also to maintain the integrity of the wood body. It works perfectly. Shokran Hassan, forever grateful, Sean
